reflections

All the last years I took a look at my old resolutions for a reality-check...here is the one for 2013 (even though in my mind we can only just have June or July and not end of December!)

2013 I wanted to:
  • buy/consume in small independent shops/cafes instead of chains whenever possible (-> I do try but have to try harder...sometimes browsing though a huge "Waterstones" and drinking a "Costa" latte is just too comforting)
  • read less reviews, forums and yellow press online as it tends to wind me up or upset me only (-> I have read less but still wasted too much time on dailymail, bild, tripadvisor...)
  • work harder for both universities (-> ha ha ha)
  • more de-cluttering at home (-> I'm maybe 10% there so no real success)
  • trying to be more groomed, always...no more chipped nail polish or grown out hair cuts for the generation 30+ (->I started using a hot cloth cleanser in the evening, have tidy nails - at least when I'm likely to meet someone- and get regular and fantastic haircuts, yeah! But it´s still a long way till becoming a lady*sigh)
  • visit theatres at least 30x, reading 30 books and watching 30 films (accomplished if not over-achieved )
  • all the remaining points from 2012 (tattoo, shopping, running, family planning) (->don't ask...but I have shopped significantly less in 2013 and spend more money on tickets, holidays and great food. Not run a single mile. Not seen a tattoo studio from the inside. Not found my maternal instinct yet.)

 so 2014 I want to:

  • find a yoga drop-in class in England to stretch those aging muscles again...and to build a closer bond to my English home
  • take part in the London Shine marathon to support Cancer Research UK again...walking 42km through London at night in September
  • to go to a professional bra fitting and from then on only wear bras that do fit (sounds silly but I think it is a rather sensible decision)
  • travel more
  • read one proper book in French
  • meet new people to broaden my horizon and "refresh" my circle of friends
  • keep on consuming as much theatre, concerts, exhibitions, books, albums, films as possible
  • the same as the last years (make my mind up when it comes to family planning, getting the second tattoo, do some university work, support smaller shops/cafes, shop less)
Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2014!

Erebos

author: Ursula Poznanski
published: 2010

plot: When 16-year-old Nick receives a package containing the mysterious computer game "Erebos", he wonders if it will explain the behavior of his classmates, who have been secretive lately. Players of the game must obey strict rules: always play alone, never talk about the game, and never tell anyone your nickname. Soon he becomes part of the game as well...

what I liked: Even though the world of nowadays teenagers, gaming teenagers even, doesn't interest me a lot I was engrossed straightaway. An inventive story, exciting, not too kitschy or superficial.

what I didn't like: One minor thing I did notice - the plot is set in London (for reasons that become clear in the last third of the book only) but clearly is written by a non-english author. For example someone is taking an aspirin plus vitamin c tablet, no one I know in England would have them at home.

verdict: A fantastic book for teenagers and adults - entertaining, suspenseful and still not shallow. I kept asking myself constantly what I would have done in the same situation. Don't be turned off only cause you are not into computer games!

Boulogne-sur-mer

we stopped in Boulogne-sur-mer early in the morning on our drive from England to Germany in June (yes, and I only recently had a look through the handful of pictures, typically me)...apart from the powerful fishy smell of the harbour it was worth seeing!

Santa and me

Everyone who knows me and/or is reading my blog knows that I'm a determined Christmas hater (and you probably pull a face now thinking "Oh, no, not again this old nagging").

It is a long time ago now that I made/received the last presents and I couldn't be happier with this and never ever want to go back to this bothersome obligation.
Now that the holidays are nearly over and done with  (and a weight has been lifted again off my shoulders, well at least for another year...) I wanna try and articulate my more than ambivalent feelings concerning Christmas.

I don't think I'm a Scrooge through and through.
The idea of sparkly festive clothes, nice food, a large family gathering and  a "proper" Christmas is not completely unappealing to me. Fact is, I never had it.
As a child of course I was happy about getting all the presents (as an only child and only grandchild you can guess what waggonloads of stuff I got each year!). Then I got a little older and was dissappointed by our low-key traditions. I wanted to have picture perfect celebrations, a Christmas that could be described as "normal" and not out usual slumber party in jogging pants and slippers. Trying to enforce my vision was hopeless and resulted only in a poisoned atmosphere where it was last needed. My Mum liked fairy lights and roasted goose but didn't care much about the whole dressing up, being together and celebrating thing so was naturally always on edge before anything had even happened.

The coming home myth never had any thruth in it for me as I always have been home. No delayed flights, no packed motorways, no snowy train rides - I should have been happy about that but it always seemed even more boring.
I watched American  films and started fantasising about a decorated house full of uncles, aunts, grandparents, grown-up brothers and sisters and babies, all coming home, all having a good time int the snow, stuffing their faces...and knew it would never happen.
My first granddad died in the winter when I was just 3 years old, years later one of my grannies was dying and lay in bed with terminal cancer, a confused mind and morphin plasters in the room next to the christmas tree. Another year my other granny suffered a stroke that she never recovered from again on New Year's day. Then my Mum spent the run up to the holiday season in hospital after a difficult cancer op, a few years later in another hospital recovering from an even more major (and hopeless) metastasis op, a year later she was at home with the mark of death and knew it was the last ever Christmas for her.
Even in the years desasters didn't strike there where at least cases of food poisoning, a near heart attack, emergency doctor visits or simply a hefty cold. Would have been boring otherwise, wouldn't it?!

Even though I can't fight it sometimes my concern is not to feel sorry for myself now or to get pity by everyone.
I just have been very very unlucky with Christmas in my life so far and have given up hope so I'm rather ignoring it as good as I can than being in for another disappointment.

Enjoy it when your celebrations so far have been under a luckier star and be thankful! I'm envying you.
But never forget that others might have their reasons for not being all christmassy at all.

It's Boxing Day, I have been hitting the shops to make some bargains in the sales and feel relieved.
Nearly twelve hopefully wonderfully normal months are lying ahead of me. I can't wait.

Dear Germany: Eine Amerikanerin in Deutschland

Autor: Carol Kloeppel
erschienen: 2008

Inhalt: Was muss eine Amerikanerin beim Bettenmachen in Deutschland beachten?

Evita

Autor: Tim Rice, Andrew Lloyd Webber
Theater: Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden
Regie: Pascale-Sabine Chevroton
Premiere: 05.10.2013

Intouchables

director: Olivier Nakache, Eric Toledano
year: 2011
with: François Cluzet, Omar Sy, Anna Le Ny, Audrey Fleurot, etc.

plot: A rich quadriplegic, living in a mansion in Paris, requires a live-in carer. A young offender turns up for an interview, but he is not really looking to get the job. However, to his surprise, he is hired. The two men then develop a close friendship.

what I liked: One of the most successful French films and it´s not a surprise. A fantastic and credible (as it is based on a real story) plot, superb actors, beautiful music by Ludovico Einaudi and my beloved Paris...
what I didn´t like: nothing, seen it three times so far and still love it.
Only one teeny tiny thing: the opera scene is not very realistic as the curtain goes up and we see an aria performed which comes from the middle of "The Freischütz" and isn´t the overture...call me a nerd, I´ll take it as a compliment.

verdict: The hype was right, this film is a must see as it combines comedy with serious issues and stays heartwarming, charming, engrossing and believable. You will love, you will cry...Quickly made it into my personal all time top ten of films.

Sunday 24 November 2013

No way!

After watching many youtubers doing this tag I'm giving it a go now.
The questions I found on Manu's blog and translated them.

No way! [food]
The majority of seafood and fish, picky with meat too.

No way! [clothes]
Tracksuits worn outside the house. The absence of shirts on men/boys during British summers. Groups of teenagers all looking exactly the same. Miniature size backpacks on elderly women.

No way! [music]
When it comes to music I'm extremely flexible and tolerant. The only two I really can't stand are Kate Bush and Rihanna.

No way! [smells]
Apart from the usual suspects, the smell when you open the door of the hot dishwasher. And "Cashmir" by Chopard.

No way! [season]
Winter! Christmas is dreadful and darkness, ice and snow even more so.

No way! [sweets]
Damn, I like everything. But not a big fan of the combination peppermint/chocolate or peanut/chocolate.

No way! [youtube]
"this video is not available in your country"

No way! [McDonalds]
Only go 1-2 a year and would never eat the chicken nuggets. McFlurries are overrated too.

No way! [people]
Unreliability, narrow-mindedness, shallowness, lack of education, friendliness and manners

No way! [celebrities]
Pretty much everyone that dominates your screen and papers while you still don't know what exactly they have done to be so famous.

No way! [hair]
Peoples hair being so filthy that it starts smelling, bahhhh.
And women with extremely long hair - makes them look like a harp player or member of some strange religious sect.

No way! [party]
Not sure, never go to any.

No way! [car]
Driving. Why should I bother when being on a bus/train I can daydream, read or snooze safely at the same time?

No way! [parents]
If one parent becomes terminally ill and dies before their time.

No way! [Instagram]
Hmm, the existence of it? Not a member, not seeing the point.

What makes you say "No way! or "Geht gar nicht!"?

Saturday 23 November 2013

free haircuts!

I´m a model now.

That shocked you now, didn´t it ;-)!?
Obviously not the runway sort of (the world is definitely NOT ready for this yet) but for a hair stylist.
But lets start at the beginning.

When you wear your hair long you will probably not feel the need to go to a hairdressers that often but once they are cropped short you start noticing that 6 weeks is the absolute longest you can survive without looking awful. As my hair is a desaster of very thin and very fine smooth hair even more so.
In Germany I usually went to a salon that is run by apprentices and you only pay 7€ for each wash/cut/blow-dry.
Now I was looking for something similar in England - after browsing the normal salons in town and deciding that you get nothing for under 40Pounds and if it´s a top stylist and not a junior you don´t wanna know (how ridiculous is that pricing system anyway? It´s not the army after all so why emphasize those silly ranks that much? To make more money of course but still...)

A friend gave me the idea to look for salons which need a model.
After a bit of online research I landed at Gumtree.
Type in "free haircut" and you will be asking yourself why did you ever paid before. There are loads of young stylists working at sometimes really high end salons looking desperately for customers to spend some of their time so they get some practise. The modalities might differ from salon to salon but I scored the biggest hit ever.
Female short hair is much sought after as it is more rare.
I read, clicked, wrote and tada:

Jones & Payne in trendy Shoreditch it was, who has just won the "Best Hairdressing Salon" London lifestyle award.

A free wash with posh Unite products, a head massage, a fantastic cut (probably the best I´ve ever had) and as much free drinks (alcoholic!!!) as you like!!!

And if all this wasn´t good enough already: I got compliments for having "good hair" for learning how to get precisely! My hair got a compliment!!! WOW (in Germany I was used to getting told that my hair is too boring and not fun to work with, thank you very much). I could have married the stylist straightaway if I wouldn´t be married already ;-)

The salon is really stylish with its mix of urban warehouse chique and baroque detailing. The staff is cool but not in a threatening way. Some reviews found it pretentious and obnoxious but I never felt that way.
(and I´m not someone who ever enjoyed going to hair salons!)

So all I have to do now is book with them, sit down, have coffee/cocktails/organic Earl Grey and relax for 3 hours and leave feeling great.

Don´t get scared of the model business, they wouldn´t do anything to your hair you wouldn´t approve of and talk to you before anyway.

I´m hooked and sad my hair doesn´t grow even quicker. Colour to try next! Never again will I pay more than a train ticket to London in order to get great hair.
So who´s saying that London is expensive!?

Sabine and Thomas Müller

Make me a German!?!
Watched that a while ago on BBC and, though disagreeing on some things, found it very very interesting.

Have a look for yourself and let me know what you think!

'tis the season

As you all know by now I'm anything but a Christmas lover...but one thing I have to admit: the Brits do some very impressive Christmas tv adverts.
Pompous, cheesy, long...but nice. Let's have a look for yourself and enjoy cute animals, a creepy as always Helena Bonham-Carter, one hot mad hatter and some Disney magic despite the two sissies Ant or Dec :-)

Sunday 17 November 2013

I do like to be beside the seaside

and yet another wedding my husband and I attended this year and had the honour to shoot. As you can see at a very different location - the wedding took place on the iconic Westerhever lighthouse, the photoshoot was on the beach at St. Peter Ording and the reception at a nearby cafe in Nordfriesland
Even though location wise I felt very much out of my comfort zone it was a pleasant change and, to be honest, how often do you get the opportunity to shoot wedding pictures at the beach in Germany?!?
Looking forward to my next brides and grooms!
