bag parade, part fifteen

where: Accessorize, Staines
when: Winter Sale, 2013

Only looking at the pictures makes me sigh of pleasure again. It's gorgeous, isn't it?
A clutch covered with stitched pansies (as you can see)...completely useless for everyday life...my wallet hardly fits...I never use clutches anyway...but I had to have it once it was reduced.
Now I can touch it, look at it, adore it.
Who said that handbags should be useful all the time?!This one's for the soul :-)

In Bruges

director: Martin McDonagh
year: 2008
with: Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell, Ralph Fiennes, Clemence Poesy, etc.

story: Guilt-stricken after a job gone wrong, hitman Ray and his partner await orders from their ruthless boss in Bruges, Belgium, the last place in the world Ray wants to be.

what I liked: Colin Farrell is an extremely handsome and sexy guy and a decent actor so it's a pleasure to watch in that respect. And Bruges *sigh*...love the city, been there twice and already looking forward to the next time. Even looked appealing in grey and misty winter weather.

whatI didn't like: The mix of subjets that don't really mix. Action, drama, comedy. For me it didn't work, it was pretty much "oh, I know that road * fucking gun goes fucking baaang* wonder where that church is *baaang*swearing* Hah, took pictures of that exact statue *bang bang bang accompanied with more swearing*
To be brutally honest, although I think that I have a good idea of accents after years in England the heavy Irish accent of sexpot Colin was too much at times leaving me longing for subtitles.

verdict: It was not unpleasant in parts and it had a certain something but it was just too confusing for me. Comedy? No way. Drama? Not really. Action? Not enough. A strange film.

intimate subjects

As we all know regular check-ups are vital in order to prevent cancer or to at least detect it at a curable stage.
For us ladies this involves the cervical cancer screening, the so called smear test.
In Germany this is recommended once every year, starting at the age of 20 and is done by the gynaecologist during a proper examination.
In the UK you are entitled to the test from the age of 25 onwards once every three years, done in the normal GP surgery (no specialised doctors to go to directly here) by "just" a nurse.
(Of course the question arises again if the UK is too lax here...or if the Germans overdo it again...guess the truth lies somewhere in between).

Anyway, the booking is a tricky subject for a cross-country commuter as I just found out.

me: Hello, I would like to book an appointment (gets the calendar out) Maybe next week?
lady at the desk: We have no free dates next week, I'm sorry.By the way, the test should only be done between day 10 and 18 of the cycle.
me: Ok... (browsing through the calendar...)
latd: How about the week after?
me: I'm not here. Hmm...
latd: How about the week after that?
me: Sounds great but is the wrong time of the month then.
latd: Yeah, right...hmm
me: How about August?
latd: Can't book that now. Our system is only open till the end of July.
me: Well, have to try it again then soon I guess

Not my fault, not their fault, just a very difficult thing to arrange.
Getting a life in England, a life in Germany, the administration of a surgery with more than 7500 patients and the female hormonal cycle all sorted out.
Well, have to try again then...as pleased I am about not having to go too soon I'm detemined to not let it be buried in oblivion.
See, even things like health check-ups and planning doctor appointments varies a lot between countries.

PS: Talking about cancer, or better: the prevention, detection and cure of it:
You can still support the charity Cancer Research UK through me. Next week I will be taking part in another Race for Life 10km run/jog/walk and I'm more than happy and extremely grateful for every penny coming in - no matter how much it is, no matter if you are from Germany, England or somewhere else in the world. Thank you :-)

the Kew left overs...

...some more impressions from this stunningly beautiful place at the edge of London. Will go again tomorrow and I´m already looking forward to it a lot!

bag parade, part fourteen

where: got this one for free for subscribing to a magazine, my Mum's passion
when: early 1990's

Real leather, smells gorgeous, slightly too small for a folder.
Never been a huge favourite of mine, but: it's in fashion again now so it's no longer a sleeping beauty but a faithful companion again.
Proper vintage...and never owned by anyone else than me. Yes, that makes me feel old now :-)

on the road 9

21.30h, the train between Mainz and Wiesbaden (not air-conditioned)
Three girls rush in, probably between 16 and 18, summer dresses, just left the lido.

a: Maaan, I´m sweating!
b: Me too! Mostly in my face...it´s so annoying. Where do you sweat most?
c: (points at her chest) Normal people sweat under their arms and I always get wet patches on my front, it´s embarrassing!
b: And my baaaack! I always sweat a lot along my spine. Look! (turns around and gets approving nods by the others)
c: But to be honest. I mostly sweat on my ass!

Good that we talked about this girls :-) But I can assure you, you are not alone

bag parade, part thirteen

where: Brighton
brand: Johnny loves Rosie
when: 2009?

I remember this one as it was the first ever buy I did with my English debit card.
A large, lightweight and soft shopper with fake-leather trimmings and a beautiful old English flower print. Still like it a lot!

Freitags-Füller 57

In genau 33 Tagen haben wir unseren 5. Hochzeitstag.

A wonderful example of how great a charity shop can be!
Forget all the musty smelling, brightly lit and charmless shops stocked with old BHS polyester jumpers and Danielle Steel novels. This one is a proper vintage shop - retro dresses, cool crockery and some second hand haberdashery. A tad more pricey than the usual charity shop but still much cheaper than all the hyped vintage places. Definitely worth going if you happen to be in or around Windsor - and it just feels so much better to treat yourself to something nice and quirky if at the same time you are supporting a charity like Thames Hospicecare.

on the road 8

the train from Richmond to Staines, a young guy, looking a bit like Harry Potter, on the phone talking about this and that (mostly Bristol, Manchester, Charles Dickens and extractor fans)

"...and then I went out for a curry...with the housemaids."

I'm irritated and fascinated at the same time.
With the housemaids? Does he have more than one? Is he that posh? Are they young and good looking? Or is he some sort of communist?
And then I think about it again and suddenly realize ; housemates not maids!!!
Well, version number one sounded much more exciting really...guess I've watched too much "Downton Abbey".

The Great Gatsby

director: Baz Luhrmann
year: 2013

story: Nick Carraway, a young man from Minnesota, moves to New York in the summer of 1922 to learn about the bond business. He rents a house in the West Egg district of Long Island, a wealthy but unfashionable area populated by the new rich. His next-door neighbor is a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby, who lives in a gigantic Gothic mansion and throws extravagant and decadent parties every week. Soon Nick gets drawn into a destructive story of love and success, hopes and disappointment.

what I liked: Surprisingly I liked Leonardo DiCaprio (just to let you know, I´m not a Titanic lover at all).

what I didn´t like: Where shall I start? First issue I had was that there were so many completely unnecessary camera movements that have no other function than entertaining the 3D customers. A waste of time and nerves for all the others and completely out of place in what is supposed to be a literature adaption.
Second: Why must a novel of 114 pages be blown up to 140min? Less scenes filled with apocalyptic and disturbing dancing and car racing would have helped. Third, using modern music might have done the trick in "Moulin Rouge" and "Romeo and Juliet" but here it just felt...wrong. I love the 20´s I love Art Deco, I don´t need Jay-Z and Beyonce in that.
How can Gatsby be played convincingly if he has to switch between a mad Willy Wonka and his alter ego Romeo all the time? How to feel compassionate when everything and everyone you see is so heavily stylised and over the top?How can the otherwise charming Carey Mulligan be so bland in this film?

verdict: Made me leave the cinema thinking "wtf?!?".
Style over substance - Mr Luhrmann, please stay away from any more literature adaptions, this just didn´t work out at all. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but all the people who so far have praised this one really must have some really weird taste.

bag parade, part twelve

where: an outlet store in Wiesbaden
when: hmm, maybe 2005?!

Recently all the Longchamp special editions have been pretty horrid imho.
This one might not be everyone´s cup of tea but as my mum and I at the time had a thing for autumn colours and brocade we had to have it (was a proper bargain too). Still use it but it´s definitely more for the colder seasons.

Fazit: Ganz seichte Kost.

syringa

a few impressions from last weeks visit to Kew Gardens, this week: syringa...what a pity that scents can´t be uploaded too
